March is always happy, delightful, but a little sad season for Takahashi.

In the farewell party, I gave one message to all graduates of my group as well as Yoshikawa lab. and Tokimatsu lab.
I strongly wish all graduates will make my message true in the future.

26th, Mar, 2018 Doctor research interim presentation
Shenglei Lin made his interim presentation of doctor research.
He will give final presentation on late Jun, 2018. It's reaching the important stage to finalize doctor research.
His thesis will be examined by Department of environmental science and technology, Interdisciplinary graduate school of Science and Engineering.
After that, new doctor thesis will be examined by Major in Global Engineering for Development, Environment and Society, Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering, School of Environment and Society.
Very confusing.

His final task is master thesis completion based on experiments and analyisis here.
During Takahashi and Lin visited Cambodia, other members had farewell party for him.

22-26th, Feb, 2018 Landfill site survey in Cambodia
After the international seminar of Urban Water Project (PI: Prof. Yoshimura, Tokyo Tech) in Phnom Penh, Takahashi and Lin visited a landfill site in Siem Reap for on-site survey, where is famous for Angkor monument.
We visited there with Prof. Takemura in Civil Engineering department, Tokyo Tech, Prof. Tanchuling in University of the Philippines Diliman, Prof. Ratha and Prof. Boreborey in Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
All wastes generated by Angkor tourists is going to this landfill site. Therefore, it is a negative aspect of tourism industry in Siem Reap.

After the field trip, we visited Angkor.
Excellent, and too hot!

19th, Feb, 2018 Best paper award in environmental engineering research
A peer-review paper of Tahakashi, published in Journal of Japan Society of Civil Engineers-G and presented in 54th Environmental Engineering Research Forum in Gifu University, was selected for best paper award.

Global Engineering course for Development, Environment and Society, GEDES, gives credits to student activities inside/outside campus such as presentation in international conference, field survey, internship, and teaching assistant.
4 doctoral students of Takahashi lab. (Baskoro, Jiang, Tshuma-Mutingwende, and Astryd) reported their TA activities and presentations in international conferences.
In GEDES, doctoral students need to get 6 credits through such activities for graduation.
What problems did they face? How to overcome? What improvements? How to make use of experiences? High presentation skill is requried to report them within limited time and limited presentation slides.

20th, Jan, 2018 Paper accepted ( J. Water Process Engineering )

The first paper of Irwin Maulana, who completed master course on March, 2017, was accepted for publication in Journal of Water Process Engineering.

Proceeding papers of Tshumah-Mutingwende and Maqhuzu presented in EnvironmentAsia2017 in Bangkok were invited to Applied Environmental Research, which is peer-review English journal in Thailand, and finally accepted in this journal.
Congratulation!

As education policy, Takahashi requests all students to make presentations in international conferences as much as possible aiming for presentation skill improvement.
As the next step for better education, Takahashi might focus more on how to train students to improve conference proceeding papers to publishable level in peer-review journals.

Everyone, welcome to Takahashi lab!

Our group has 16 students now. One more exchange student from Finland would join us on Jan, 2018.
In our group, doctoral students are much more than master students. In waste recycle research field, it might be distinguished all over the world.

Yu Tian and Nisrina Adisti Karina made their interim presentations of master studies in GEDES.
(GEDES: Graduate major in Global Engineering for Development, Environment, and Society)
We had master thesis final presentation, which was old education curriculum, next day.
Although it is in transitional phase from old to new education curriculum, it is confusing for both faculty and students.

Why nobody took pictures of the party?

14th, Apr. 2017 Visit to Seoul Tech
Owing to a good opportunity and as a return of their visit to Tokyo Tech on Feb. 2017, we visited Prof. Phae and Prof. Lim in Seoul Tech.
Prof. Chae-gun Phae is our alumnus. He got doctor degree in Tokyo Tech.
In his lab., each student is in charge of his/her research project and advances it by him/herself. It is Prof. Phae's education concept.
When his students hunt jobs, their rich project-based experiences are valued highly by companies.
This way is attractive to successfully combine education with research.
However, it requests supervisors to get research funds for each student and have high ability to balanace student initiative and research progress. Hard but necessary skill for me.

12-13th, Apr. 2017 iwwg-ARB2017 @Seoul
8 members of Takahashi lab. (Takahashi, Kunta, Kitamura, Lin, Song, Jiang, Astryd and Maqhuzu) made their presentations in 3rd iwwg-ARB confernece "iwwg-ARB2017" in Seoul.
In our group photo, Prof. Xiaoming Wang, Chongqing Univ. joined us. Thank you!

In the conference party, Kitamura hit a lottery and got a small gift.
He also won a lottery in Korea-Japan joint session of KSWM one year ago. He has good luck in Korea. Let's buy big lottery tickets in Korea!

Qiuhui Jiang entered doctor course from master course.
Two new students join our group, Rosamond R.M.S. Tshumah-Mutingwende in doctor course and Tatiya Wannomai as a research student. Wannomai will enroll in doctor couse on Oct. 2017. Welcome!
11 of total 12 students are foreign students in our group. Engish is the common language.
Let's make this school year successful!

First joint seminar in FY2017 with Yoshikawa and Tokimatsu lab.
